Vocabulary Test

Twenty multiple-choice questions on word meanings, synonyms, antonyms and choosing the right word in context. When you finish you get your score, the questions you got right and wrong, and a short explanation for every answer.

What the vocabulary test covers

  • Word meanings — choosing the definition that matches a word such as abundant, diligent or lucid.
  • Synonyms — finding the word with the closest meaning, for example a synonym of brave.
  • Antonyms — finding the opposite, such as the antonym of expand.
  • Words in context — picking the right word inside a sentence, including commonly confused pairs like affect / effect and rise / raise.

Each question has four options and is worth one mark. Your percentage is (correct answers ÷ 20) × 100. Retake as often as you like: questions and answer options are shuffled on every attempt.

How to use your result

A score tells you which words to look at, not how clever you are. After the test:

  1. Read the explanation for every question you missed.
  2. Write one sentence of your own using each word you got wrong.
  3. Wait two or three days, then take the test again. Because the order changes, a higher score means the word has actually stuck.
