English Level Test
Twenty multiple-choice questions covering basic grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure, articles, prepositions, verb tenses and common English usage. At the end you get your score, an informal level estimate and a full answer review.
This is an informal estimate, not a certificate. The result is based on twenty general questions and the bands below. It is not an official CEFR, IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge placement, and it cannot be used as proof of your English level.
What the test covers
Grammar and structure
Verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, question forms, reported speech and word order inside a sentence.
Vocabulary and usage
Word meanings, synonyms and antonyms, and the words that commonly travel together in everyday English.
Articles and prepositions
Choosing between a, an and the, and the prepositions used for time, place and movement.
Common problem areas
Pairs such as its / it's, fewer / less, and verb patterns that follow particular verbs.
How the level is estimated
Every question is worth one mark. Your percentage is (number of correct answers ÷ 20) × 100, rounded to the nearest whole number. The percentage then falls into one of these broad bands:
| Score | Estimated level |
|---|---|
| 0–39% | Beginner |
| 40–59% | Elementary |
| 60–74% | Intermediate |
| 75–89% | Upper Intermediate |
| 90–100% | Advanced |
These bands are a rough guide for self-study. Real placement tests are longer and are assessed by trained examiners.
