How the typing score is calculated
The test uses the standard gross words-per-minute formula. A “word” is counted as five characters, including spaces and punctuation.
| Measure | Formula |
|---|---|
| Words per minute (WPM) | (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed |
| Accuracy | (correct characters ÷ characters typed) × 100 |
| Correct characters | characters that match the paragraph at the same position |
| Incorrect characters | characters typed that do not match, including extra ones |
The timer starts on your first keystroke and stops after 60 seconds, or earlier if you finish the whole paragraph.
Three tips for a better score
- Accuracy first. Going back to fix a mistake costs more time than typing the next word carefully.
- Keep your eyes on the screen. Looking at the keyboard is the single biggest limit on speed.
- Stay relaxed. Loose wrists and shoulders let your hands keep a steady rhythm for the whole minute.
