Grammar Test

Twenty multiple-choice questions on tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, prepositions, pronouns, sentence structure and the mistakes learners make most often. Every answer comes with a short explanation.

What the grammar test covers

Tenses

Present simple and continuous, past simple and continuous, the present perfect with for and since, and the first and second conditional.

Agreement

Singular and plural subjects, collective and uncountable nouns, and subjects joined by either … or and neither … nor.

Articles and prepositions

A, an and the, plus the prepositions used for time, place and direction.

Structure and pronouns

Relative pronouns, question tags, reported speech, inversion and verb patterns after particular verbs.

Each question has four options and is worth one mark. Your percentage is (correct answers ÷ 20) × 100.

Turning a score into progress

  • Group your mistakes. If three questions involve the present perfect, that is the rule to review, not three separate problems.
  • Write your own examples. Three sentences of your own fix a rule better than reading it again.
  • Retest later. Questions and options are shuffled on each attempt, so retaking after a few days gives you an honest reading.
